Introduction:
Plant3D is a powerful process tool developed by Autodesk to create 3D models of piping systems and processes within factories. Plant3D is built off of the Autodesk AutoCAD platform and integrates with other Autodesk products. Plant3D is a smart, spec-driven program meaning that lines and devices are defined and able to be referenced for development of P&IDs, isometric drawings, device lists, and bills of materials (BOMs).
Unified Theory, Inc. (UTI) has been utilizing Plant3D for over a decade and has successfully completed many 3D modeling projects ranging from small piping systems to entire product lines.
Plant3D is beneficial for anyone looking to have a navigable model of their entire process line or factory. It can be used to help develop piping design for new or existing equipment and processes. These models can be used in conjunction with other programs and disciplines (mechanical, structural, architectural) to conduct clash detection, optimize layouts, and contribute to a Building Information Model (BIM).
Utilizing all of these features, UTI’s team of experts can efficiently provide a 3D model of your process, factory, or specific room as well as full construction packages fully reviewed and stamped by our team of Professional Engineers
Implementation:
Using a combination of existing drawings and/or models, site visit notes and sketches, and other owner-provided information, UTI can create a piping model that contains all the information required to assemble a construction package for any process system. Typical construction packages produced by UTI contain isometric drawings (each containing its own BOM) to show dimensions and device placements; plan views, elevation views, and section views to give a visual representation and show relative position to structures and equipment; and process lists (valves, lines, instrument, and specialty items) to assist with ordering.
Drawings from AutoCAD P&ID can also be migrated into a Plant3D project models. Using the drawings made in AutoCAD P&ID, a 3D model can be created using the same item tags and specifications, marrying the drawing to the model.
Files from Plant3D can be exported to other software, which can be used to import the piping information for additional analysis (e.g. – pipe stress). Pipe stress is important for any lines containing hot or cold fluids (e.g. – steam, condensate, cryogenic fluids) as the pipe will grow or shrink once the fluid begins to flow and the metal changes temperature. This growth/shrinkage can cause stress on the pipe if not properly addressed with expansion loops and joints. This stress could cause a rupture in the pipe.
How Can UTI Help?
UTI are experts at overcoming challenges. Do you need P&IDs for your current system or process? UTI can create as-built drawings of the system to work off of and develop. Do you need a building model? UTI’s structural engineers can create one from existing drawings or document it themselves. Are you missing pipe specifications? UTI can work with you to develop what types of pipes and fittings are compatible with each service within your process.
UTI is flexible and can work through a changing design. All designs are iterative processes, with changes to the process or building happening throughout the project. UTI’s engineers will work with you to keep the design up-to-date with any changes or modifications that occur.
