THEORETICAL PROCESS MODELING

Examples Of Theoretical Modeling

1. Situation:
A polymer coatings manufacturer required a new pilot plant with three reactors of different nominal volumes: 20, 30 & 75 gallons.

Each reactor required the following as auxiliary equipment:
  • Packed Column
  • Condensers & Vacuum Pump
  • Overhead Condensate Receiver/Decanter
  • Heating/Cooling Jacket
  • Heating Coil
The basic questions were:
  • What should be the design basis for sizing the overhead equipment?
  • What should be the design basis for sizing the reactor?

Example Of Theoretical Modeling

3. Cost for Model Development:
  • These parameters were determined from known utility and process parameters & the Churn-Turbulent Model for Liquid Froth expansion in a cylindrical vessel. Cost: $5,000.
4. Client Benefits
  • Each piece of auxiliary equipment was sized in proportion to it's respective reactor.
  • Equipment sizing was used as the basis for equipment specs and quotations.
