SOFTWARE MODELING

Example of Software Modeling

1. Situation:
  • PLC and HMI software can and should be modeled.
  • During a project for Process Manufacture, all system configurations for process conditions/permutations were developed, and the PLC systems engineers were required to evaluate all process conditions using software tools to provide feedback and allow for off-line simulation. Approximately 30 different configurations were presented.
  • PHAs were also required to meet the Management of Change (MOCs) Policy.

3. Cost for Model Development:
  • Cost to develop the Model and Software PLC Testing was about $35,000.
4. Client Benefits:
  • System diagrams were required to facilitate PHAs
  • Less down time
  • Less possibility of system failure
  • Less field cost for contractors and engineers
  • Quicker process start ups
  • Compliance with NFPA and OSHA for covered processes
